August is National Breastfeeding Month! We’ve created new fact sheets and infographics, as well as updated state-specific breastfeeding resources, to help you learn more about the importance of enacting policies that support breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding is a healthy practice for both mothers and children, with benefits ranging from decreased morbidity for mother and child to economic and developmental benefits that extend past infancy.
However, mothers experience many barriers to breastfeeding, such as stigma, inequitable policies, and inhospitable health care practices.
To learn more about how to promote access to breastfeeding, check out our resources:
- NEW! Infographic and fact sheet: Breastfeeding from the Start explains the crucial role that hospitals play in promoting breastfeeding.
- NEW! Infographic and fact sheet: Breastfeeding & Racial Equity highlights racial differences in achieving breastfeeding goals and proposes interventions to alleviate those inequities.
- Updated US state fact sheets: Breastfeeding-Supportive Hospital Practicesprovides information about hospital practices that support breastfeeding in the 18 US states with laws that support breastfeeding among maternity patients. These fact sheets will help public health advocates and policymakers identify opportunities for reform and improvement.
- Updated legal dataset: The Laws That Support Breastfeeding Among Maternity Patients catalogs and maps US state laws on breastfeeding-supportive hospital practices, allowing for detailed analysis and comparison.
These resources were informed by the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, an evidence-based standard for maternal care practices in hospitals. The 10 Steps were created by Baby-Friendly USA, which implements the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative of the United Nations Children’s Fund and the World Health Organization.
These products were made possible by funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
