Parental attitudes play a huge part in helping children have healthy interactions with their surroundings. These attitudes create the most important social influence that children experience in their early childhood years. While there is limited research on the relationship between parental attitudes and child outcomes, experts are drawing on empirical evidence to understand the connection between the two.
On the whole, experts have found that parental attitudes are products of the information parents have about parenting, as well as the expectations and values these parents have for their children. The values and expectations are usually informed by societal, cultural, and social practices, the parent’s experiences, and his or her general goals and values.
When a parent’s attitude is accurate and benign, it elicits a positive behavioral outcome. However, when a parent’s thinking is distorted and upsetting, it distracts and eventually impairs effective parenting, as the study explains. That said, parental attitudes influence child outcomes in more ways than one.
