Parenting with PTSD: the impact of child abuse on parenting

Parenting as a survivor isn't talked enough about. It's hard for us, the abused child who is now the parent, to understand our own reactions, let alone share our thoughts, suffering, and desire to heal with any one else.

Recognizing and navigating new triggers, the child and basic acts of parenting, as a new and even seasoned parent is hard. Even harder because of the shame layered around the level of vulnerability one has to embrace to unlearn and to heal.

But there are starting to be places safe enough for us to have these hard conversations, and normalize the experience of parenting survivors. And for that I am very grateful.

Today, I talk with Tina Hallock and Serena Cameron Ward on their podcast No Need to Explain with the Mental Health Mamas about Parenting with PTSD - what that feels like, can look like, and how it can be perceived. Also, about how curiosity and connection has helped me heal.
