I got an email from another parent last week. She saw I was giving a talk on Parenting with PTSD and talking about ACEs. I am. She might not be able to be present, due to childcare issues, but wanted to know if I knew of any resources.
Here's the thing. There are few resources. Few peer to peer supports, for parents, where there is childcare and a safe and affordable place to learn and practice regulating our own selves so we can help guide our kids. This, to me, is missing and it's missing for parents at all income levels. It needs to be community based and not only about "treating" what in us is considered broken, but just in allowing parents to share with other parents, to learn and brainstorm and come up with ways to support each other.
We all feel like we are in it alone. We often are in it alone.
We often don't know the hundreds to thousands of others also struggling with sleep deprivation, money, addiction, interpersonal challenges while dealing with jobs, schools, traffics and tantrum.
So, as I do regularly, I request any resources or organizations or individuals you know about doing this work to reach parents and to help connect parents to one another in ways that make life better for us and our children and the future.
Because, at present, it's still hard to find. But, this community right here (which I shared as well) is a move in the right direction. Because at least we are able to say what we'd like, what we need, what we may be missing in ourselves or our immediate circle. And maybe we can work on creating it together.
