Yolo County Children’s Alliance (YCCA) parenting guides promote positive parenting skills and strengthen protective factors that have been identified to reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect. All three YCCA guides are available in English, Spanish, and Russian on our website: www.yolokids.org/forfamilies. 1) Weathering the Storms: A Guide to Healthy Expressions of Emotions for Parents and Children
This guide discusses how to identify emotions, the importance of empathy, and how to prevent and weather emotional storms. The guide is designed to help parents teach their children to identify and express feelings in a healthy way, while also developing skills to better regulate their own emotions. Weathering the Storms covers identifying emotions and the power of empathy, using calming activities when emotions are building, weathering emotional storms by waiting before talking, responding to emotions in the calm after the storm, and learning to predict future storms. This guide supports the following protective factors: parental resilience, knowledge of parenting and child development, and social and emotional competence.

2) Make Time for Yourself: A Self-Care Guide for Busy Parents
This guide discusses the importance of self-care and provides many self-care ideas to try. To help parents prioritize self-care, the guide covers the importance of self-care and divides specific self-care ideas into those that only take 5 minutes to do and those that take more time. There are also activities that parents can do with children. The ideas involve calming the mind, connecting with supportive relatives and friends, exercising, laughing, finding activities that bring joy, and getting enough sleep. This guide supports the following protective factors: parental resilience and social connections.

3) Talk + Play = Connect Toolkit for Families
This guide provides information and ideas about how to talk, play, and connect with children at different developmental stages. In addition to general information on the importance of talking and playing with children, this guide provides age-specific talking tips and activities for parents to do with their children generally and at three specific times during the day (in the morning, during mealtimes, and at bedtime). Ideas are divided into the following ages: baby, toddler, preschooler, school-age child, and teenager. The toolkit can be printed out in its entirety or parents can read only age-appropriate pages. This guide supports the following protective factors: knowledge of parenting and child development, social and emotional competence of children, and nurturing and attachment.
