Toxic Stress, Behavioral Health and the Next Major Era in Public Health

Meeting Description:

America is confronting significant challenges to our overall health and wellbeing.  We lag other advanced nations across a wide range of health and functional indicators, and our international competitiveness is increasingly threatened. However, we have emerging insights into the root causes of these problems.  Our understanding of the interaction of genetic vulnerability and toxic stress and trauma in the development of neurological, endocrine, and immunological systems is quickly advancing.  Predictable problems in these systems lead first to behavioral and subsequently to other health problems and wide ranging effects on wellbeing and productivity.  This emerging science provides a new platform for a coordinated response. Just as the public hygiene movement and the germ theory of infectious disease revolutionized our health in the 19th and 20th century, we are now poised to fundamentally change our strategies for preventing illness and promoting health.  Behavioral health is the lynchpin.

In this webinar we will review the health and wellbeing of the American people relative to other advanced nations, present an integrated theory that helps explain the development of these problems, summarize evidence-based preventive and treatment strategies, and lay out a framework for a public health response. We’ll also discuss areas in which we have made progress and the need for a more integrated approach to focusing our investments.   Although responding to these interrelated issues is an ambitious task, it is no more ambitious than building municipal water and sewage treatment systems was for the early public health reformers.
