Social and Emotional Supports for Educators During and After the Pandemic

Americanprogress.org released an article 'Social and Emotional Supports for Teachers During and After the Pandemic' giving a ton of great information on the stress that educators deal with regularly. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning defines SEL as the process where youth and adults learn skills to manage emotions, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

"Research by Pennsylvania State University found that teachers who developed their SEL skills improved both their own well-being and the social, emotional, and academic development of their students." Giving educators the support they need in developing their SEL skills will reflect on our youth. The article then goes on to list a few ways to create and maintain SEL skills throughout the school year:
  • Keeping an open line of communication between school administrators, staff, and teachers.
  • Begin the school year with a survey to see what SEL training the teachers would like to see more of.
  • Check in throughout the year to see what is working and what is not.
  • Provide teachers with professional development opportunities.
