Reducing Isolation in Youth Facilities Webinar: Strategies for Working With Your Most Challenging Youth

Youth in the juvenile justice system present with a wide range of needs. As professionals in the field of juvenile justice it is our responsibility to interact with youth in ways that foster skill development, promote pro-social thinking and behaviors, and ultimately assist youth in becoming contributing members of society. The majority of youth in our care respond to the evidence-based programming we provide but there are some youth that leave us wondering, “what else do these youth need?” This webinar aims to provide information on effective strategies for working with the most challenging youth in our system – those youth who have significant mental health issues, have experienced primary or secondary trauma, and/or youth who are highly aggressive or assaultive. Three state juvenile justice agencies will provide information on specific strategies and program elements that have shown to be effective when working with these specific youth populations.

1) To better understand strategies for working with youth who have:
 Chronic or significant mental health issues
 Primary or secondary trauma
 Exhibited repeated highly assaultive or aggressive behavior

2) To learn how three state juvenile justice agencies (IN, MA, and OR) effectively program for these most challenging youth

3) To apply the learning from the webinar to daily interaction with youths in confinement
