In The Black Panther movie, we marveled over Okoye and her magnificent band of the Dora Milaje, powerful female warriors. In this true-to-life depiction, Wakanda is Dahomey, present day, Benin, West Africa. Okoye is a famous female warrior and forgotten queen named Queen Hangbe who lead the most powerful army in West Africa fighting against the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, the MINO also known as the Amazon Women of Dahomey. Today, we are remembering their brilliance, fierceness, discipline and power as warriors.
Healing historical trauma is an opportunity to heal the ancestors and future descendants. In Indigenous culture we continue to revere our ancestors long after they have transitioned into the spirit world. When we heal, our ancestors heal. Through our spiritual DNA and the brilliance of epigenetics we have the potential to impact our children for the next 14 generations.
The most impactful way to facilitate change is through supporting self-healing communities. To that extend, Heal Historical Trauma is sponsoring a fundraiser to support a self-healing community and academic excellence in the name of THE MINO, "Our Mothers". There are 2 different t-shirts styles on sale for $25 and $30. The proceeds will support unity among children without families by providing traditional West African clothing to those in need and bicycles for the top 3 performing students in each grade in the Village of Ouidah, one of the largest slave-ports in West Africa.
