SECOND CHANCE YOUTH GARDEN COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA) PROGRAM

STARTS NEXT WEEK JAN 9th!

About Us

The Second Chance Youth Garden is a job training program for low-income, at risk and formally incarcerated high school aged youth in San Diego. Through our program, youth gain a wide variety of skills from running a small scale urban agriculture business, to team building, healthy food preparation, and customer service. To learn more visit  www.secondchanceprogram.org/youth-garden.

Our Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA) program is a membership based revenue generating program for our urban farm.  Customers pay $300 up front for a “share” and in return receive a weekly box of farm fresh bounty. Our CSA seasons are 10 weeks long and our boxes include 8-10 seasonal fresh fruits and/or veggies and a newsletter with recipes and stories about our youth. Proceeds from our CSA help pay stipends to youth enrolled in our program. In fact, each CSA memberships allows one youth to receive a stipend for their hard work and participation in our program.

Eating in Season

Everything in our CSA boxes is grown in season by youth and staff. For some members eating in season takes some getting used to, but it is a great opportunity to learn about new crops and taste the freshest produce you can find!

In our Winter Share you Can expect…. Lots of greens and citrus! It’s a great time to kick that cold or start a healthy new year routine of soups and juices. Cooler temperatures this time of year allow crops like these to thrive:

  • Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage
  • Kale, Chard, Collards, Mustard Greens
  • Carrots, Beets, and turnips
  • Lettuce, Salad Mix and Arugula
  • Green Onions, Kohlrabi, Cilantro and Parsley
  • Lemons, Oranges and Grapefruit!
