PACEs and the Social Sciences

PACEs occur in societal, cultural and household contexts. Social science research and theory provide insight into these contexts for PACEs and how they might be altered to prevent adversity and promote resilience. We encourage social scientists of various disciplines to share and review research, identify mechanisms, build theories, identify gaps, and build bridges to practice and policy.

A Letter from STAT's Executive Editor

Dear Readers:

Days and nights often seem indistinguishable for those of us stuck at home, so you might not have noticed that today is the first day of fall. It’s the start of what could be a precarious season in this year of Covid, making it an opportune time to publish a major project that we hope will give you perspective on what lies ahead.

From Bill Gates to Anthony Fauci, STAT interviewed more than three dozen authorities to help us game out the coming months of the pandemic. Reporter Andrew Joseph didn't just leave it to the experts; he also talked to people ranging from a funeral home director to an architectural historian, a barkeep, and a turkey farmer.

The result: 30 key moments in 2020 and 2021 that will be possible turning points in the pandemic, or barometers for how the virus is reshaping our lives. We don't expect all our forecasts to come true. In fact, as surging death tolls stare back at us, we hope that we're often wrong.

READ NOW

But after nearly nine months marked by magical thinking and an unnerving sense that none of us has been prepared for what was coming next, we think that Drew's reporting — accompanied by sparkling illustrations from Mike Reddy — offers an essential guide of the possibilities.

This project is intended to have a long shelf life — don't feel you have to read it in one sitting — and we have a tool that allows you to jump from section to section. Drew will also discuss his takeaways on the next edition of The Readout LOUD podcast this Thursday.

Since early January, we've put all of our general-interest Covid stories like this one in front of our paywall as a public service. You can find these articles — and our Covid-19 tracker — on our landing page. We are grateful that so many of you have made contributions to help pay for this vital coverage, and hope you can continue to support us, as this public health crisis shows no signs of slowing down — and neither will our reporting.

CONTRIBUTE NOW

Beyond Covid-19, if you are a die-hard STAT reader, we offer individual, as well as group and academic subscriptions, to STAT Plus. The subscription offers even more comprehensive coverage of the life sciences, biopharma and health tech industries, and of the intersection of health and politics

Thank you for reading STAT and, as always, I welcome feedback at rick.berke@statnews.com.

Stay safe,
