Right now, Florida legislators, Senator Randolph Bracy and Representative Kamia Brown are advancing bills about reparations for the Ocoee Massacre and “want to see a reconciliation, including a state study of what happened on Nov. 2, 1920, for the state record, and compensation for the descendants of victims.” (FLAPOL)
In the Spring of 2018, the Peace and Justice Institute led film forums in partnership with the local Truth and Justice Project. Earlier this year, the City of Orlando and Orange County placed a marker in the ground, in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative, to memorialize the lynching of July Perry in November, 1920. Now, a 100 year memorial is being planned to commemorate the Ocoee Massacre.
Each of these events is part of the healing process to address the collective trauma of the Ocoee Massacre that continues to affect our community.
A move toward reparations is one additional way to admit and work to heal this overwhelming injustice and human tragedy.
