Last month PJI Executive Director, Rachel Allen, and PJI Resilience Community Manager, Sofiya Asedrem, went live on the Peace and Justice Institute's Facebook page to announce the Common Read book for 2024.

This book club was started in 2019 to encourage the common read of books related to Positive and Adverse Childhood Experiences (PACEs), toxic stress, trauma, healing, and resilience. To date, the group has read the following books:
- 2019: The Deepest Well by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris
- 2020: Building Resilience in Children and Teens by Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg
- 2021: Childhood Disrupted by Donna Jackson Nakazawa
- 2022: What Happened to You? by Dr. Bruce Perry & Oprah Winfrey
- 2023: The Body Keeps the Score by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk
In 2024, PJI's Resilience Network will convene a community reading of Healing: Our Path from Mental Illness to Mental Health by Dr. Thomas Insel, former director of the National Institute of Mental Health. While mental illnesses are medical problems, Dr. Insel argues that the cures for the crisis are not just medical, but social. This path to healing, built upon what he calls the three Ps (people, place, and purpose), is more straightforward than we might imagine. Dr. Insel offers a comprehensive plan for our failing system and for families trying to discern the way forward.
In the book, there is reference to the work of Judge Leifman (Associate Administrative Judge of the Miami-Dade County Court) who was a keynote speaker at the Peace and Justice Institute's 5th Annual Creating a Resilient Community Conference.
PJI will host three in person discussion sessions between the months of January and March.
Free copies of the book will be distributed to members of the community at the Resilience Network Meeting on December 12, 2023.
