The United Nations (UN) sanctioned International Day of Peace is September 21st. The mission of “Peace Day” is to have at least one non-violent, cease-fire day throughout the world. The international theme for 2022 is “End Racism. Build Peace”.
Each September, the Peace and Justice Institute (PJI) celebrates the International Day of Peace, followed by the Global Peace Week (GPW) Conference. The work of peace-building ties directly into the work of building resilience because peace practices such as mindfulness, meditation and healthy relationship-building, are all ways to build individual resilience. Further, as a community, we can not build peace or become more resilient without first healing and addressing individual and community trauma.
This year’s Peace Day celebration will be held at the Winter Park Public Library, where PJI will screen the film, “Mission: JOY – Finding Happiness in Troubled Times” - a film that explores the lives of two Nobel Peace Prize Laureates united for one final mission: to show the world how to live with JOY, even in troubled times. The free film screening begins at 6 p.m., followed by the creation of a human peace sign at 8 p.m.
On September 26th, PJI will launch Global Peace Week (GPW) offering festivities and events that include peace education, daily meditation, guest speakers, and free film screenings in partnership with the Global Peace Film Festival. Through a variety of thought-provoking workshops, Global Peace Week teaches the lessons of resilience, empathy, conflict transformation, allyship, healthy communication, and more.
As we adjust to new phases of the pandemic, we come together in mutual support to strengthen our resilience and invite healing and compassion. Join us!
