Although prevalence estimates vary, there is consensus that high percentages o f indi- viduals who have interactions with the criminaljustice system have experienced seri- ous trauma throughout their lifetime. The reverberatingeffects oftrauma experiences can challenge a person's capacityfor recovery and pose significant barriers to access- ing services, often resulting in increased encounters with the criminal justice system.
This webinar will provide an overview ofwhat is trauma and how it impacts individ- uals and communities. The session will also highlight how trauma-informed criminal justice responses can help avoid re-traumatizing individuals, and thereby increase safetyfor all, decrease recidivism, and promote and support recovery ofjustice- involved women and men with chronic mental illness. A panel ofexperts will share examples oftrauma-informed initiatives that are currently in place and how these collaborative cross-system partnerships are impacting the individual and our community.
