Why PACEs Matter (Free Community Workshop)

In this workshop, participants will learn about the Resilience Network and the science of Positive and Adverse Childhood Experiences (PACEs), trauma, and toxic stress, and their impacts on health, behavior, learning, the economy, and our community. Additionally, we will touch on Adverse Community Experiences that when paired with Adverse Childhood Experiences, have been referred to as the "Pair of ACEs." The workshop defines what it means to be trauma-informed and explains the strategies to heal trauma and build resilience.

Facilitator Information:

Tolu Adebanjo McKenzie, MD, MPH, FAAP is a double board-certified pediatrician and preventive medicine physician and a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) trained medical epidemiologist.

She currently works at Janssen Pharmaceuticals as an Associate Field Director for Infectious Diseases and Vaccines. Dr. Adebanjo received her Master of Public Health and Medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and she completed her pediatrics residency, including her chief residency, at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

Dr. Adebanjo is a graduate of the CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program, which provides a two-year training in applied epidemiology. As an EIS officer, she worked in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases and on the Zika response, serving as lead author for CDC’s guidance for congenital Zika virus infection. Dr. Adebanjo also completed her preventive medicine training through the CDC where she was assigned to the Florida Department of Health in Orange County and to Orlando Health’s Corporate Quality and Value Based Care and Population Health departments. Prior to working at Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Adebanjo worked in clinical informatics and served as faculty for the pediatric residency program at Orlando Health.

As a pediatrician and public health physician, Dr. Adebanjo has interest in diversity in medicine, health equity, and adverse childhood experiences.
