2019 Beyond Paper Tigers Conference Series - Why Take Course One and Course Two?

Community Resilience Initiative is officially launching a new series of blog posts, building to our 2019 Beyond Paper Tigers conference on June 25th - 27th. We’ll cover a range of topics relevant to conference material, events, and inspirations.

In addition to the regular conference, CRI is offering two training add-on options on Tuesday June 25, 2019 prior to the conference: Resilience-Based Trainings, Course One and Twohttps://criresilient.org/beyon...re-conference-event/

“A group of people can sit through six hours and say, ‘we can change the world,’” Teri Barila of CRI notes about the most recent Course One and Two trainings in Everett, Washington.

Teri has been presenting and training trauma-informed material for many years, and Course One and Two are recent consolidations of what we know about trauma. Alongside Rick Griffin of Jubilee Leadership Academy, Teri teaches Course One to spark a mindset shift in participants, for each to learn the basics of brain science, that behavior is communication, so that we may remove our lenses of judgment.

Rick hopes participants walk away with an understanding that, “folks are driven by their experience. It’s hard to focus, behave, and interact in ways that are contrary to their experience,” he describes of individuals who may have outward expressions of the toxic stress in their lives.

Through this course, we can learn the basics of how to understand those in an escalated state. People leave the room feeling passionate, inspired to help their communities.

And ultimately, those with an increased understanding have been requesting concrete strategies for how to actualize this newfound knowledge. Course Two delivers such strategies.

Rick asks, “You know there will be people out there [affected by trauma] You won’t always know who they are. What are some of the strategies to give them better experiences?”

In Course Two we ask ourselves, what practical skills can we use to respond to ACEs and build resilience? How can we keep people safe and connected? And how might we know whether it is safety or connection specifically that they need?

“Prevention is based on this,” Rick asserts. “You can’t teach someone until they are safe and connected. And we are much more likely to comply with a community that is helping us regulate and stay safe; we don’t want to break bonds we’ve created with a [safe] community.”

Teri asks her audience. Imagine what would it look like if we all participated in these strategies, nurtured our community and sense of belonging?

Many will choose this training because it pertains to their work as educators, counselors, caretakers, etc. Yet one might walk away with greater connection to oneself, one’s smaller communities, and one’s family.

Pre-Conference Resilience Based Trauma-Informed Training Offerings

Course 1 (to be held at Red Lion Hotel Pasco)- dynamic six-hour course with lunch provided and Key Points packet. 8:30 to 3:30pm. Course 1 introduces CRI’s capacity-building framework for building resilience, KISS. Knowledge, Insight, Strategies and Structure describes our community’s learning and movement from theory to practice and how to implement evidence-based strategies into action. The training includes three groups of topics: the NEAR sciences, a cluster of emerging scientific findings in the fields of Neuroscience, Epigenetics, ACE Study, and Resilience; Brain States, the critical transition from Knowledge to Insight; and ROLES, CRI’s signature training on Recognize, Observe, Label, Elect and Solve, core strategies that take us below the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The key objective is to provide information about identifying and responding to trauma with evidence-based resilience strategies when working with an audience whose trauma history may not be known.100 person capacity

Course 2 (to be held at Red Lion Hotel Pasco)- dynamic six-hour course with lunch provided. 8:30-3:30 pm. **Please note Course 1 is a prerequisite for Course 2.** Course 2 describes training on topics that teach the knowledge and skills required by individuals who have contact with those who may be adversely affected by trauma and toxic stress, whether or not the trauma is known. These topics include resilience-based practices with universal application, such as classrooms, offices, or other places the general public may congregate. Topics in this category focus on prevention and teach a variety of strategies to address the often-hidden effects of trauma and toxic stress by fostering resilience within the individual and the larger community. 100 person capacity
