Early Childhood Education Training Approved as Evidenced Based Professional Development by Tennessee Department of Human Services

In the summer of 2020, the Tennessee Early Childhood Training Alliance (TECTA) at Austin Peay University, reached out asking me to provide several professional development opportunities for early childhood educators statewide after being awarded grant funding.  TECTA leadership requested that I deliver a training I had used in July of 2020 when training the childcare leadership of the state of Mississippi.  The training entitled, Using a Trauma Informed Approach in Early Childhood Education, includes the basics of trauma, how trauma impacts early childhood brain development as well as classroom strategies to incorporate social emotional learning.  As a result, after presenting it twice for TECTA, regional Head Start leadership contacted me requesting to schedule dates for training Head Start staff.  This course can be delivered in either a two- or three-hour setting, virtually or in person.  This professional development course includes:

  • What is trauma
  • How to identify trauma
  • How trauma affects brain development
  • Understanding the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study
  • Universal prevalence of trauma
  • Building resilience
  • Strengthening caregivers’ protective factors
  • Classroom strategies for helping traumatized children to heal and learn
  • Teaching social emotional regulation
  • Serve and return interactions

In the state of Tennessee child care professionals who have direct responsibility for the care and oversight of children, including center administrators and family child care home operators, must complete certain trainings to comply with the Tennessee Child Care Rules.  The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) is committed to recognizing research/evidenced based training and professional development that aligns with Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) and other standards and practices.  This training has been approved by TrainTN, which is an online portal for trainers in the field of early childhood education and child development to receive recognition from the Tennessee Department of Human Services.  This evidence based professional development course (as well as myself as a trainer) have been approved by TrainTN until January of 2025.  If you would like to know more about this training or to schedule professional development, please contact Becky@beckyhaas.com
