The Perks of a Play-in-the-Mud Educational Philosophy [theatlantic.com]
Most American kids don’t spend large chunks of their day catching salamanders and poking sticks into piles of fox poop. In a nation moving toward greater standardization of its public-education system , programs centered around getting kids outside to explore aren’t normal. But that’s precisely what students do at the Nature Preschool at Irvine Nature Center in Owings Mills, Maryland. There, every day, dozens of children ages 3 to 5 come to have adventures on Irvine’s more than 200 acres of...

Raising The Organic Unity Of Child-And-Community
“When a child displays a behavior problem, the first place to look for the cause and for the solution is to the child’s environment.” Maria Montessori We cannot truly separate the child from the community. Good mothers are on the same wavelength as their babies... literally: Brain scans reveal toddlers learn better if parents 'sync up with them' by smiling and maintaining eye contact [Daily Mail]
Good mothers teach their babies best when they think along the same wavelength - literally. Scans have revealed that infants whose patterns of brain activity most closely resemble their mum's take on new information more quickly. Experts say that parents can encourage this 'syncing' - known as neural synchrony - through social cues including smiling and maintaining eye contact. This mirroring of brain wave patterns was a good predictor of how well babies' learn about their environment,...

"I'll be here again next week." - Because if one person stays, that will be enough.
When a child welcomes you into their life, honor that. Hold that in the highest regard because on that day you have not only become a friend, but a glimmer of hope. You represent a world where people don’t make empty promises, tell lies, or disappear without a warning. In the eyes of a child who is more familiar with grief than joy, you very well could be the key to the elusive stability they have always heard about, but never known.
