The Attachment & Trauma Network (ATN) is excited to announce the line-up for its upcoming 2021 Creating Trauma Sensitive Schools Conference, to be held virtually February 15 thru 18, 2021.
On Monday, February 15, Dr. Tina Payne Bryson kicks off the conference with her presentation: Teaching During A Pandemic. On Tuesday, Dr. Ingrid Cockhren will speak about The State of the Black Child, an important and timely presentation that will look at racial trauma and the impact on child development. Wednesday, February 17, 2021 will feature Dr. Melissa Sadin, with The Intersection where Culturally Competent and Trauma-informed Schools Meet. The conference will conclude on Thursday with Dr. Mona Delahooke and her presentation: The Relationship Between Challenging Behaviors and Childhood Trauma.
Each of these speakers and presentations has been selected to speak directly to conference attendees about our understanding of childhood trauma and the world in which we currently live. Julie Beem, Executive Director of the Attachment & Trauma Network said: “Now more than ever the information this conference brings is crucial for our attendees. The Covid-19 pandemic especially has upended the lives of families, and we need to address this head-on.”
Beem continued: “In addition to the Covid pandemic, we must address cultural competency, race, and trauma. Studies have shown that African Americans and other children of color are more likely to be exposed to trauma. It is imperative we equip educators, and this year parents, with the best strategies for helping these children.”
2021 marks the 4th Annual Creating Trauma Sensitive Schools Conference. Because of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the conference will be held virtually for the first time. However, Beem indicated they are hopeful that ATN will return to an in-person conference in 2022. “We’re working hard to make this conference a relational, impactful experience. Educators and parents deserve to be acknowledged for the incredible work they’ve done during this year of unprecedented upheaval. Recognizing what self-care and tools the adults need is an important way to ensure that the children get adults who are present, caring and ready to build resilience in the students.”
