Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, California Surgeon General, will be the lead witness in a hearing on trauma-informed practices in education on Wednesday, Sept. 11 in the House of Representatives Education and Labor Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education. The hearing is titled "The Importance of Trauma-Informed Practices in Education to Assist Students Impacted by Gun Violence and Other Adversities." Other witnesses include Ingrida Barker, Ed.D., Associate Superintendent,McDowell County Schools, Welch , WV, Joy Hofmeister, Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Oklahoma State Department of Education, and Janice K. Jackson, Ed.D., Chief Executive Officer, Chicago Public Schools. The hearing begins at 10:15 am in 2175 Rayburn House Office Building.

Also on Sept. 11, a briefing “Afterschool Programs and a Trauma Informed Approach” will be held hosted by the Senate Afterschool Caucus in partnership with the Afterschool Alliance, National Summer Learning Association, Girls Inc., YMCA of the USA, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, America Scores and Communities in Schools, Girls, Inc., National 4-H Council, National Recreation and Park Association, National Summer Learning Association, Schools Out Washington and YMCA of the USA. The briefing will be held 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m in 385 Russell SOB, Washington, DC.
