An imperative for those in "towers" to connect with the realities of trauma in schools

Judi Vanderhaar ·
Boosting SEL in K-12's "Ivory Towers" Educational Leadership October 2018 | Volume 76 | Number 2 The Promise of Social-Emotional Learning Those of us in administration must lift our "social awareness" by getting closer to schools and the people inside them. The superintendent's leadership team for the district where I was working had just finished its Monday morning meeting. One member of that team stopped as he passed by my cubicle to view the large poster I'd recently hung up. It displayed...

Ordinary Magic-Resiliency Research - The Power of Connection

Michael McKnight ·
Resilience and Positive Psychology The message from three decades of research on resilience underscores central themes of the positive psychology movement (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000; Snyder & Lopez, in press). Psychology has neglected important phenomena in human adaptation and development during periods of focus on risk, problems, pathology, and treatment. Attention to human capabilities and adaptive systems that promote healthy development and functioning have the potential...

CONNECTING WITH KIDS IN PAIN

Michael McKnight ·
Kids in pain cannot learn!!! Often your most difficult students are young people living in environments with Toxic Levels of Stress. These environments change the brain! The next time you are involved with a student that is escalating and beginning to loss control try some of the following ideas . 1. BE A THERMOSTAT- NOT A THERMOMETER Develop with-in your head a pause button. Slow down. Everything in your body will be telling you to speed up... remember emotions are very contagious.

Sesame Street's Traumatic Experiences Website / First 5 CA Care, Cope Connect Resource

Alicia Doktor ·
Thanks to Alejandra Labrado from First 5 Sacramento for providing the links to these resources! Sesame Street's Traumatic Experiences: https://sesamestreetincommunities.org/topics/traumatic-experiences/ When a child endures a traumatic experience, the whole family feels the impact. But adults hold the power to help lessen its effects. Several factors can change the course of kids’ lives: feeling seen and heard by a caring adult, being patiently taught coping strategies and...

Spot on! Nicely written Judi! I recently tweeted the way you know a District is truly trauma-informed is when your Superintendent leads each meeting with a grounding exercise Something of note for the TI community: There is an upcoming #suptchat next week, Nov. 7 at 7pmCT to discuss mental health sel leadership in schools. All the efforts that are taking place in the schoolhouse with Little P (policy) needs to be supported within the district/state Large P (policy). Our movement benefits...

Re: Educational Trauma

Kary Wilson ·
I was a teacher for the last 7 years and have had to leave permanently because I felt the stress created by the education system was causing real harm to the students, their families, and myself. The environment triggered me because it reminded me of my own dysfunctional family - never talk about the real problems and push all issues under the rug, and find a worthy scapegoat. The scapegoat was the administration. I tried everything to stay in education - I adored working with the kids - but...

Dear Kary, Thank you for commenting on my post. I was very touched by your experience, and the clarity with which you see it. Karen Horowitz wrote "White Chalk Crime," and says that teachers are abused and scapegoated by the educational system. She compiled 678 pages of stories... May I help with your noble cause of shedding light on teacher trauma? Please email me drgray(at)me(dot)com if you are interested. Teachers need a team of heroes! Warmly, Lee-Anne

Great point often children are shown the hand of avoidance rather than the hand of compassion. Have you read up on this concept of sanctuary trauma?

Hi friends. Recently started playing at 21 Bit Casino , and I can say that it's one of the best Australian online casinos I've tried. The nice thing is that you can use cryptocurrency to play - it's very convenient. The range of games is impressive, from your favorite slots to live dealers. Customer support promptly answers questions, which is also a big plus. Overall, a great place for those looking for a quality casino with crypto payments!
