Co-Regulation with Students " At-Risk"-- Calming Together
Co-regulation with Kids "At-Risk"-Calming Together Highlights and thoughts from an article by Howard I. Bath:Calming together: The pathway to self-control Neuroscience shows that humans develop their abilities for emotional self-regulation through connections with reliable caregivers who soothe and model in a process called “co-regulation.” Since many troubled young people have not experienced a reliable, comforting presence, they have difficulty regulating their emotions and impulses.

As Houston ’s school district of more than 200,000 students scrambles to repair damaged schools before classes begin next week, they must also plan for traumatized students to enter the classroom. The Houston Independent School District is in the process of working with counsellors, nurses and social workers to develop a “mental health recovery plan” for the district’s hardest hit schools, according to a statement from HISD. In the meantime, Mental Health America of Greater Houston and...

The Brain and Troubled Children and Youth
Troubled kids are distinguished by their regrettable ability to elicit from others exactly the opposite of what they really need. ( L. Tobin ) Connecting with troubled students is not easy work. Many of these young people come into our classrooms and schools on a daily bases depressed, hostile, discouraged, unmotivated and angry. Underneath their sometimes outrageous and provocative behaviors these young people's lives come up way short on joy and long on despair and hopelessness. Their...

No More 'At-Risk' Students in California [insidehighered.com]
By Lindsay McKenzie, Inside Higher Ed, November 5, 2019 A decades-long effort to change how educators talk about students facing economic or social challenges has been backed by California lawmakers. A bill to remove references to “at-risk youth” and replace the term with “at-promise youth” in California’s Education Code and Penal Code was approved by California governor Gavin Newsom in mid-October. The California Education Code is a collection of laws primarily applying to public K-12...

Re: Why Teach about Grief and Loss?
Thank you for this post. Yes. We all need some guidance on dealing with grief and loss. Waiting until it happens is NOT the best approach! This reminds me of the facts about healthcare in the documentary "Resilience." The US spends $3 trillion on healthcare and just 5% of that goes to prevention. We spend 13 years of life in school to learn about some aspects of life most of us will never need. I would venture to say less than 5% of that time goest to practical teaching about the ups and...

Re: Why Teach about Grief and Loss?
Thanks for posting. You are spot on about children needing to be better prepared to understand grief and loss. Actually adults need this too. I used to do the Children's Talk in my previous church. One Sunday, this was the topic and I had a small book to use for my object lesson. (I never had anything "normal" like a children's book, so this lesson was unusual for that reason.) The book "Water Bugs & Dragonflies" by Doris Stickney is an excellent way to start a conversation. Your...

Why Teach about Grief and Loss?
For the Special Issues in Grieving and Loss class that I started last month, I was asked to write an informal paper and explain why I chose to enroll in this class, what outcomes I expected and what my goals were. Three years ago, I enrolled in the M.S. in Guidance and Counseling program at STU after one of my students attempted suicide, and nothing had been done by support staff or administration who had been informed of his intentions, to prevent it. I’ve been wanting to take the training...

I am so glad to see this! we have some more work to do. The most stigmatizing language we use is in Special Education: Special Day Classes; Mild Moderate and Moderate Severe.... I am not sure what they mean? I would love to work with others to shift this to more of a Growth Mindset!
