Hello, In my community the local Head Start provider has implemented Trauma Smart and enjoys it greatly with reported positive outcomes. Although most of my childhood was spent in North Carolina I now live and work in the Kingdom of Bhutan. I have been working within the SDP for the past several years as a school-based outpatient clinician, as well as a school-based clinician within an STS program. As I establish relationships with teachers and administrators , I use language that introduces them to trauma-informed concepts (safety plans, triggers, de-escalation techniques, viewing the child as "injured," not "bad." Lee ~ You hit on a key point. No one should be surprised that we don't "punish" the students. We use a restorative justice model to teach students how their actions/behaviors impact the community as a whole. It's time intensive, but it has helped prevent suspensions and expulsions, which has helped create stability in the lives of our students. I forgot to ask...has anyone done the Neurosequential Model in Education (NME) training through the Child Trauma Academy? It is very costly. I have considered trying to look for a grant to help pay for this if it is fantastic.

Hi Dominic, You are correct. Our students are between the ages of 15 and 20, with the average age being 17 yrs and 9 months. Screening at younger ages may need to be done face to face, or by having a parent/guardian fill out a survey? We also do a comprehensive file review when a new student enrolls. We request records from all previous schools, medical records (when applicable), and in some cases we will call the previous school(s) to try to gain a better understanding of what the child has...

Hi Wendy, I am so glad you replied. Having seen the disconnect in the schools where you have worked, do you have any ideas on how to bridge that gap? I know that in MN, the teacher licensure process is extensive, and by the time educators are done with their schooling, you would hope that they had been inundated with information on child development, brain development, cognitive processing, etc. But that does not appear to be the case, at least not at any depth. I'd appreciate any thoughts...

I have been teaching an online course called Supporting and Educating Traumatized Students. I use my book by the same name as well as multiple other sources of information. The evaluations that I receive at the end of the course are very positive. I also do about 24 speeches a year on treating ODD and Conduct disorder from a trauma informed perspective. many teachers attend this seminar and give very good evaluations. Does your survey consider teacher self-care from the trauma experienced via workplace bullying in education? Does your district have a workplace bullying policy? I am a volunteer in my community who are in the early stages of learning about trauma informed care. There are some teenagers in our community who have been impacted by ACEs and succumbed to using opioids. A few of them who could afford the expense have enrolled in out of state (expensive) residential treatment centers (RTC). I am not sure if some of these RTCs explicitly use trauma informed care. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines five core SEL competencies , including (1)self-awareness, (2)social awareness, (3)self-management, (4)relationship skills, and (5)responsible decision making. The CASEL Five SEL competencies ARE NOT sufficient to achieve that which they were created to accomplish and which CASEL itself was created to accomplish. There are 6 core competencies, not five, and the 6th is the one that is by far the most important.

Erin, I would suggest you consult with the child's trauma therapist. Any child that has a trauma history should (and would greatly benefit) from having a "Trauma Trigger Management Plan." Avoiding triggers creates a fine line to walk. In a classroom setting - I think it's very important to avoid triggers - in a personal confidential and therapeutic setting - where a child may want help processing a trigger - is a different scenario but should only be addressed by a team working with that...

I'd like to read this book. I like different genres, which allows me to learn more information in different areas. I haven't had much time for books lately. Now I'm preparing a research project, and it takes a lot of time. I decided to find this sample, and it helped me.
