All pupils will be taught about mental and physical wellbeing (gov.uk)

Dawn Cretney ·
It's a start. Clearly many children do not grow up in households where this information is known and understood and healthy patterns hold. I believe we still have a way to go including ACEs and that emotional health is key. All children in England will be taught how to look after their mental wellbeing and recognise when classmates may be struggling, as the Government unveils new guidance for the introduction of compulsory health education. Bold new plans set out today (Monday 25 February)...

How COVID-19 Impacts Children’s Mental Health

Lori Turk ·
Mental health among children and youth is already a concern. In 2018, there were 41,087 hospital discharges for mental health issues among California youth ages 5-19, a 38% increase in the last decade . With the emergence of COVID-19, children with existing mental health issues must endure the added burden of a pandemic. Children often rely on schools to provide mental health services, but school closures have made it difficult to access and preserve the quality of these services. Historical...

Schools' role in tackling bad childhood experiences [BBC.com]

As a teenager he was sleeping in a park and trying to wash his clothes in a river so he would be clean for school. Matthew Cox was one of too many children who did not get adequate help soon enough, Future Generations Commissioner Sophie Howe has said. She wants the education system and agencies working closer on adverse childhood experiences (ACE). Mr Cox, now 22, works in a call centre and dreams of starting his own landscape gardening company. It is an amazing turnaround for a man who...

'Teach children about their human rights in schools' [bbc.com]

Lara Kain ·
When a Swansea primary school began to teach pupils about their human rights, several children told teachers they did not feel safe at home. Rachael Webb, headmistress of Hafod Primary school, said it led to the involvement of the authorities. "It does make children think about how they should be treated," she said. In 370 schools across England, children will be taught how to meditate, techniques for muscle relaxation, and breathing exercises for mindfulness. The program is being conducted under a mental health study that the British government is running up until 2021. Aside from the increasing number of young children that are showing signs of early onset depression and anxiety , National Health Service (NHS) reports have also indicated that 1-in-8 British children have mental disorders. Despite...

Mental Health in Finnish Schools: So Close to Perfection [thelancet.com]

By Cassandra Coburn, The Lancet, August 30, 2019 Finland's educational system is routinely praised as among the best in the world, achieving superb results through methods regarded by other scholastic systems as unorthodox. Among the differences that single it out for praise is the delayed start to education, with compulsory schooling beginning with a pre-primary education for children at 6 years old, and full-time schooling only starting at age 7. In contrast to the battery of tests faced...

All of these practices and frameworks are -- or should be -- informed by the new knowledge about the unified science of human development, aka ACEs writ large, or NEAR science. This encompasses the epidemiology of adverse childhood experiences (ACE studies), the neurobiology of toxic stress, the biomedical and epigenetic consequences of toxic stress, and resilience research.   Frameworks and Models Attachment, Self-Regulation and Competency (ARC) Source: The Trauma Center at the...

Re: Amplifying empathy in teachers can help prevent student suspensions, researchers find

Jennifer Fraser ·
As a teacher, when I read that we need to "humanize" the children in our class and see if they perform better, I am truly disturbed. No adult should be allowed in a class or on a court or field if they do not have a profound knowledge that their "clients" are humans and more importantly are children. Kids lack knowledge and power so they are the ultimate victims. If systems are not in place to protect them, they are at the mercy of teachers who fail to recognize their fragile humanity. We...

Re: Amplifying empathy in teachers can help prevent student suspensions, researchers find

Jennifer Fraser ·
The key is to hold adults who "teach" bullying accountable and then worry about laws for children. Right now in US and Canada, emotional abuse (ie adult bullying) is fine; there are no laws, no deterrents, nothing that stops it and if there is, it's chaotic, lacks federal sanction, is random. Adult bullying of children is rampant in sports for example and nothing is done about it. The UK has changed this by recently making emotional abuse criminal. Can't happen soon enough in US and Canada.

Re: Diverting the School to Prison Pipeline Through School Connectedness

Beth Tolley ·
Thank you. Kids with disabilities are also disproportionately in the school to prison pipeline. It is time that there is recognition of the importance social-emotional education and competency plays in success in all other areas of education - and that all teaches need basic education and competencies so they can support all children. Your blog made me think about an article I came across recently about UK instituting mandatory lessons in "relationship education" beginning in primary grades...

Re: Teaching Kids To Bounce Back at 'Last-Chance High' [KPLU.org]

Jennifer Fraser ·
This is important work...but I think we can do better. What we must do is stop treating the symptoms and instead tackle the abusers. If there were people out in the world infecting people with cancer---like we saw with smokers---they would be legally shut down. Why can't we do the same with abusive adults? Where are the laws that hold caregivers financially and criminally responsible for harming children? Long overdue. Let's put emotional abuse and negligence in the criminal code like the UK...

Re: How are schools incorporating trauma informed practices, if they are at all?

Dominic Varle ·
Leisa - as someone who is trying to introduce trauma-informed practice to a school here in the UK, I found your post incredibly helpful in its detail and I shall be thinking further on the issues and solutions you've posited. What resonated with me most in your comments was the importance of adding an intake survey, which I am pressing to be added to our pre-admissions assessment process. I am in the currently constructing something along those lines, and I would be very interested in seeing...

Trauma Informed Care -- Workforce training framework

Russell Wilson ·
A colleague of mine -- here in New Zealand!! -- recently passed the attached PDF, from Scotland, onto me. It concerns a relatively recent, and still developing, proposed trauma training framework. This might be helpful to others wishing to go further in introducing TIC in their own services. It includes a consideration of ACEs. Naturally, it needs to incorporate culture-specific additions or modifications to suit your local conditions. The document as it is likely has broad application.

Greetings from the UK! I’ve always been cautious about online casinos, but PlayOjo changed that for me. A friend recommended it because of its no-wagering policy, and I’m glad I gave it a try. I’ve had a few lucky wins since joining, and it’s reassuring to know that there are no hidden terms when withdrawing winnings. It’s one of the most transparent and fun casinos I’ve played at in the UK.
