Toxic Stress: Issue Brief on Family Separation and Child Detention [immigrationinitiative.harvard.edu]
By Jack P. Shonkoff, Immigration Initiative at Harvard, October 2019 Background The separation of children from their parents and their prolonged detention for an indefinite period of time raise profound concerns that transcend partisan politics and demand immediate resolution. Forcibly separating children from their parents is like setting a house on fire. Preventing rapid reunification is like blocking the first responders from doing their job. And subjecting children to prolonged...

Developing Relationship Based School Support Services
The most power is in the conversations and daily practices that occur each day. Each person’s self awareness and developing awareness of how trauma impacts behavior and relationships can provide an opportunity for healing and breaking the cycle of creating more trauma.

What I appreciate about this is that through offering guiding questions, it compels the reader to reflect on what they've done/considered/assumed/etc. -- rather than giving a prescriptive set of instructions. Self reflection among adults is so often overlooked to the detriment of repairing relationships with students where the focus is typically on the student to change and/or reflection on their behavior. Thanks for sharing here.

Pay and hours have been cut for our staff—most of us will be laid off for the month of December. Another grant will pick up in January, but we will still be underfunded. Since sounding the alarm this summer, we’ve raised about $26,000 . Thankfully, about 25% of new donors are making monthly...

To put this important data driven study in perspective look at its conclusions from the other end of the telescope: A substantial amount of child abuse is caused by family stress due to poverty which is created by public policy.

If You Build It, They Will Come
Family engagement is my "thing." So much so that I even wrote a book about it that was published a little over a year ago. I believe that a child's family is their first teacher. I further believe that we could learn a lot about how to best help our students learn if we would just rely a little bit more on the insight of their families. Backtrack about three years and a different district: My co-teacher and I decided to combine our classes and do a monthly STEM/STEAM parent engagement...
