Re: An International "LIVE" Dialogue about ACEs in Education?
Hi Leisa and other members, I am very excited about this opportunity for open discussion. I'm at EST+10. Although most of my childhood was spent in North Carolina I now live and work in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Child protection is an emergent topic here with the first legislation appearing in 2011 in conjunction with acceptance for the convention on the rights of the child. I'm looking forward to learning more about tangible practices for preventing childhood trauma, particularly at school,...

Re: How are schools incorporating trauma informed practices, if they are at all?
I have been working within the SDP for the past several years as a school-based outpatient clinician, as well as a school-based clinician within an STS program. As I establish relationships with teachers and administrators , I use language that introduces them to trauma-informed concepts (safety plans, triggers, de-escalation techniques, viewing the child as "injured," not "bad." I then offer to present in-service trainings for teachers about the impact of trauma on learning, where...

Thank you all for your positive input. In the Netherlands we are wrestling with the same topics you are. My wife and I wrote a book about trauma and attachment related problems in school. In our research we found the following English/American literature very helpful: Attachment in the Classroom - Heather Geddes What about me? - Louise Michelle Bomber Inside I'M Hurting - Louise Michelle Bomber Teenagers and Attachment - Edited by Andrea Perry Settling to Learn Louise Michelle Bomber &...

I forgot to ask...has anyone done the Neurosequential Model in Education (NME) training through the Child Trauma Academy? It is very costly. I have considered trying to look for a grant to help pay for this if it is fantastic.

Re: How are schools incorporating trauma informed practices, if they are at all?
Hi Dominic, You are correct. Our students are between the ages of 15 and 20, with the average age being 17 yrs and 9 months. Screening at younger ages may need to be done face to face, or by having a parent/guardian fill out a survey? We also do a comprehensive file review when a new student enrolls. We request records from all previous schools, medical records (when applicable), and in some cases we will call the previous school(s) to try to gain a better understanding of what the child has...

Re: How are schools incorporating trauma informed practices, if they are at all?
Hi Wendy, I am so glad you replied. Having seen the disconnect in the schools where you have worked, do you have any ideas on how to bridge that gap? I know that in MN, the teacher licensure process is extensive, and by the time educators are done with their schooling, you would hope that they had been inundated with information on child development, brain development, cognitive processing, etc. But that does not appear to be the case, at least not at any depth. I'd appreciate any thoughts...

Re: Has anyone surveyed teacher attitudes about trauma-informed care as a way to collect some baseline data?
Does your survey consider teacher self-care from the trauma experienced via workplace bullying in education? Does your district have a workplace bullying policy? A year ago, the AFT and Badass Teachers Association conducted an unscientific, national survey ("Quality of Work life Survey") which indicated teachers were deeply stressed... That survey lef to an amendment in ESSA (co-authored by Senators Booker and Baker) so that school district communities can apply for Title II funding in order...

How Can We Make South Florida Schools Trauma Informed?
Let's Make South Florida Schools Trauma Informed by Endorsing TIS Leaders! This is Natalia Garceau from Broward County, FL. Last February, in Washington, DC, l met so many wonderful, caring educators from all over the United States and abroad at the first ATN Conference for Creating Trauma-Sensitive Schools. Sadly, I was the only person from South Florida, and I was not sent to DC by my school district. I came there on my own to learn newest strategies of how to help traumatized children...

Partners in Georgia and States Near Georgia
I am looking to partner with folks in Georgia who are working to address ACEs. Does anyone have information on ACEs particularly in Georgia schools? My hope is to help end the practice of paddling children in public schools. To that end, I'm co-sponsoring a conference for teachers. Here's a brief description. I should have a brochure and landing page ready in about two weeks. The conference is February 8-9th at the Loudermilk Conference Center in Atlanta, Georgia called, DISCIPLINE THAT...

Trauma informed Classroom for Deaf students
Recently, I attended an IEP for a primary age Deaf child whose 'back to school' weeks have come from Hell. I'm both an adult with disAbilities and a long time teacher (both general and special education) - 44 years. It was as though the school knew nothing about trauma and even less about what it's like to live with trauma from having a disability. Child had gotten a new teacher this year. This child, like other kids born deaf to hearing parents, lived thru several years without language...

What do you think, is a 6th SEL core competency needed?
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines five core SEL competencies , including (1)self-awareness, (2)social awareness, (3)self-management, (4)relationship skills, and (5)responsible decision making. The CASEL Five SEL competencies ARE NOT sufficient to achieve that which they were created to accomplish and which CASEL itself was created to accomplish. There are 6 core competencies, not five, and the 6th is the one that is by far the most important.

Re: Does Eric Jensen's Brain Based Learning Align with Trauma Informed Approaches?
Maureen, I am writing a paper on this now for a graduate course I am finishing on learning theories. I will also be doing a presentation using Articulate Storyline that I will publish. I should be finished within a week to 10 days. I might add my research on trauma in children was the bulk of my master's degree in Applied Behavioral Analysis. I also have a child who suffered with "extreme" pre-adoptive abuse and neglect. So this is both professional and personal for me. So far my answer to...

Re: For parents who want to talk to schools
Hello Ariane, I have some suggestions: Chapter 4 of The Connected Child (attached with permission) shows the disarming of fear to create felt safety in what I think is an approachable way that is easy to share with teachers. An Article of "Trauma Informed Classrooms" from Adoption Advocate (attached with permission) gives some practical framework to what is needed in a classroom setting TBRI® Animate: Toxic Stress & The Brain - is helpful as well. I provide resources for Southern...

Re: Trauma Informed Curriculum for 13-18 year olds that have experienced trauma?
Erin, I would suggest you consult with the child's trauma therapist. Any child that has a trauma history should (and would greatly benefit) from having a "Trauma Trigger Management Plan." Avoiding triggers creates a fine line to walk. In a classroom setting - I think it's very important to avoid triggers - in a personal confidential and therapeutic setting - where a child may want help processing a trigger - is a different scenario but should only be addressed by a team working with that...

Corrected Thesis; ACE's Knowledge and Awareness is a POWERFUL Therapy that delivers proven effective Therapeutic Healing in and of Itself. Simply knowing of ACE's and of one's own score is healing above any therapeutic intervention currently in use, to the best of my knowledge - odd as this might sound to those whose livings are made providing such therapies - not that these are not also beneficial - but the numbers speak for themselves I think. Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris has published some...
