Re: Has anyone surveyed teacher attitudes about trauma-informed care as a way to collect some baseline data?

Sandy Goodwick ·
Does your survey consider teacher self-care from the trauma experienced via workplace bullying in education? Does your district have a workplace bullying policy? A year ago, the AFT and Badass Teachers Association conducted an unscientific, national survey ("Quality of Work life Survey") which indicated teachers were deeply stressed... That survey lef to an amendment in ESSA (co-authored by Senators Booker and Baker) so that school district communities can apply for Title II funding in order...

ACE Scores of Educators

Ellen Smith ·
Has anyone researched or seen research on the ACE scores of educators (or doctors for that matter). We are doing to do a sampling but will be unable to release the data due to confidentiality issues, but would like to have some similar information to share on an HHS collaborative regarding ACEs and the opioid and obesity epidemics, poverty and the like. Thanks in advance for trying. Cheers, Ellen

Balancing science with justice for violent teens

Leisa Irwin ·
Anita Wadhwani, The Tennessean As research emerges about the impact of trauma on a child’s developing brain, state leaders are grappling with the thorny problem of how to balance science with justice when dealing with violent and criminal teens. The development issues are commonly referred to as “adverse childhood experiences” – and they impact just about every public entity that encounters children – from public schools to the Department of Children’s Services to hospitals and the criminal...

Pilot Program... Can a Picture Book Promote Mindfulness?

Janie Lancaster ·
Have you used a picture book to promote mindfulness? What was your observations? I wrote a picture book "Edwina Beena's Polka Dot Day" to help children like me (traumatic childhood) to have a more peaceful mind. My original goal was to get my...

Re: For parents who want to talk to schools

Renae Dupuis ·
Hello Ariane, I have some suggestions: Chapter 4 of The Connected Child (attached with permission) shows the disarming of fear to create felt safety in what I think is an approachable way that is easy to share with teachers. An Article of "Trauma Informed Classrooms" from Adoption Advocate (attached with permission) gives some practical framework to what is needed in a classroom setting TBRI® Animate: Toxic Stress & The Brain - is helpful as well. I provide resources for Southern...

Hi! I am very curious what you found after using your book in the school setting. I am a school counselor to K-5th grade students in Texas. I look forward to hearing how you were able to use your book and the results of your project. Thank you in advance.

Re: PPT for High School Students explaining ACEs

Carlene Przykucki ·
Ana - I just attended the ACE Interface Train the Trainers session in northern Michigan, and I asked whether Dr. Anda and Ms. Porter felt the "Understanding ACEs" presentation was appropriate for teens. Their counsel was that it is not, for a variety of reasons. So perhaps you may wish to make a follow-up contact with ACE Interface about the matter.

Re: PPT for High School Students explaining ACEs

Former Member ·
When I was a suicidal teen, I wish someone would have explained to me what was going on in my brain and that I wasn’t insane. I believe it is appropriate for teens -generally - maybe explained in a more general way like when you have these experiences and poverty and foster care and homelessness - your brain develops in a certain way and you will need support and to take special care. I’m my humble opinion, Laura and Dr. Anda are wrong. PS - If I had still been in N. MI, I would have been in...

Feedback requested: prosocial video games supporting resilience

Drew Crecente ·
The nonprofit group I work for is presenting its 15th annual prosocial game design challenge. For this year's competition the theme is resilience . We will launch the contest before the end of June and would appreciate more feedback regarding the educational resources about resilience that we are sharing with the participants. Some Background When we launch a game design challenge we try and provide as much helpful information to game developers who will participate. We do this so that the...
