SunnysideFlex: A Web-Based Intervention for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder during Pregnancy

The Trauma Informed Health Education and Research (TIHCER) Collaborative presents,

SunnysideFlex: A Web-Based Intervention for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder during Pregnancy

Presentation: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects 4-8% of women in the general population during pregnancy, but up to 33% of women from disadvantaged or minoritized communities. Unfortunately, PTSD is rarely detected or treated in obstetric settings. Further, there is a massive shortage of providers trained in evidence-based PTSD interventions. Web-based interventions for PTSD during pregnancy offer great potential in extending treatment to high-risk pregnant women by providering affordable and accessible care. SunnysideFlex is the first evidence-based web intervention designed to address PTSD during pregnancy. This presentation will provide key insights into the nature and consequences of perinatal PTSD, describe the development of SunnysideFlex, and present newly available pilot data (N=10) on feasibility, acceptability, and clinical change metrics.

Dr. Erin Berenz, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist and former Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Berenz directed a NIH-funded program of research on the etiology and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and co-occurring alcohol use disorder. She now is a co-founder of Rebound Health, a VC-funded start-up company focused on promoting trauma recovery through digital health. Dr. Berenz also provides independent consultation on evidence-based trauma recovery programming to community health organizations.

Katherine Paltell, M.A. is a 6th-year clinical psychology doctoral student at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She is currently completing her clinical doctoral internship at the University of Chicago Medicine, with a focus on pediatric neuropsychology. Katherine’s research explores the psychiatric sequelae of trauma during high-risk developmental periods. She is especially interested in understanding the impact of trauma on the perinatal experience and maternal and infant behavioral health outcomes.
