ACEs Connection envisions a resilient world where ALL people thrive. We are an anti-racist organization committed to the pursuit of social justice. In our work to promote resilience and prevent and mitigate ACEs, we intentionally embrace and uplift people who have historically not had a seat at the table. ACEs Connection celebrates the voices and tells the stories of people who have been barred from decision-making and who have shouldered the burden of systemic and economic oppression as the...

The Tiny Cell that Connects our Physical and Mental Health, and Solves a Decades-old Mystery of Why Toxic Stress Leads to Brain Changes that Spark Depression, Anxiety
More than a decade ago, I was diagnosed with several autoimmune diseases, one after another, including Guillain-Barré syndrome , which left me paralyzed twice while raising two young children. All told I spent six years in and out of bed and hospitals, learning, between crises, to use a cane or walker to navigate life as a working-mother-with-chronic-illness. My immune system was repeatedly and mistakenly attacking my body, causing the nerves in my arms, legs, and those I needed to swallow...

We Want YOU to be Part of The League of Extraordinary People
You are extraordinary. Writing this post feels like I have come full circle. In April of 2019, Alfred White reached out to me on ACEs Connection. Shortly after, we spoke at length about the plans he had to create a place of healing and hope in Federal Way and King County, Washington, specifically for individuals with a history of trauma and who were now impacted with symptoms such as addiction and homelessness. I recall sharing with Alfred that there was such a need for this in that...

Re: What is your field and how does your work connect with ACEs?
I am 24 days away from graduating with my Master's in Public Health. The programs emphasis is Community outreach and education and my own personal interest is in Maternal and Infant/Child health. I plan on becoming an Lactation Consultant in the near future and will be working very closely with parents. Early parenting intervention and support is very much related to ACEs as well as primary prevention.

Re: What is your field and how does your work connect with ACEs?
I am majoring in social work and will be starting my practicum in the fall. My placement is at a community action center. Once I graduate though I hope to work with homeless and unaccompanied youth. ACEs are important for this because many youth who are homeless leave their homes because of a traumatic experience and frequently experience further trauma as a homeless minor.

Re: What is your field and how does your work connect with ACEs?
I am getting ready to start law school at the University of South Carolina in the fall, and I am interested in (eventually) working in the juvenile justice system. As an undergraduate, I majored in Psychology and Gender Studies. Together, these majors have peaked my interest in adolescent development, the role of the juvenile justice system, transfer to adult court, as well as intimate partner violence.I am particularly interested in exploring how juvenile courts can establish a good balance...

Hello Joanna, Since I'm just now getting started with my education in the legal field, I'm still not absolutely sure how I want to get involved. At this point I definitely see myself becoming a defense lawyer. However, I can also see myself working for the state in child welfare and domestic violence cases as well. At this point I'm really just looking forward to getting involved and learning as much as I can about the juvenile justice system and family courts. My background in psychology is...
