ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaskans joined non-profits across the country in building thousands of bunk beds for children in need on Saturday.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national non-profit with a local chapter here in Southcentral Alaska. Around 50 volunteers spent the day at Anchorage Home Builders Association, building bunk beds as part of SHP's annual Bunks Across America event.
According to the website, the organization intends to break a Guinness Book World Record by building 2,500 bunk beds all in one day. As of Saturday evening, 1,500 beds had been built with numbers still pouring in.
Alaska's Southcentral chapter just recently started building and delivering beds in May.

Chapter president John Holwege says multiple organizations, including Lowe's and Anchorage Home Builders Association, donated to the cause here in Alaska. He says building 50 beds from the ground up and equipping them with mattresses, pillows and bedding costs around $10,000.
