One Student; 123 Bowls for the Needy [Anchorage Press]

The Nov. 30, 2019, earthquake destroyed more than half of the bowls Molly Estes had made in her quest to help others in need via the 25th Annual Empty Bowl Project set for Sat., March 9 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Dena’ina Center in downtown Anchorage.

“The whole week (students were out of school post the quake), there was this rush of worry,” Estes said, noting that she had finished 63 bowls prior to the seismic event. “I was anxious to get back.”

But it didn’t stop her drive. The Eagle River High School senior used the skills she’s acquired in four semesters of pottery under the direction of Jacob Bera to double up her efforts in class time and on the weekends at an Anchorage pottery studio to replace the 36 bowls Mother Nature destroyed.

If you attend Saturday’s event and your bowl has an earthy green tone, it just might be one of the 123 bowls Estes made. Hers are part of 175 bowls coming from students in the ERHS art department and join a long history of Bera’s students contributing to the event benefitting Bean’s Café and The Children’s Lunchbox.

Estes choose the laguna celadon – a primary earth tone – to represent her love of the outdoors.

“It is symbolic of the outdoors,” she said. “The outdoors is very valuable to me and I find the outdoors relaxing similar to what I experience when doing pottery.”
