I wrote a book about developmental/ family violence and how ACES during early childhood can lead to the adult survivor perpetrating his own violence. It's the story of intergenerational transmission, the cycle of violence.
I worked with domestically violent men as a prison psychologist for 28 years in the Wisconsin correctional system. While the population of offenders is not a sympathetic group, I believe that we need to address the development of an abusive personality if we want to stop family violence.
I focus on developmental trauma focusing on how the ACES interferes with the normal development of a helpless infant to a fully functional adult. I discuss the effects of trauma on neurological and brain growth, attachment and ego development. Included is a discussion of the effect of ACES on learning and note how the traumatized child often looks hyperactive.
I believe my book shares important information if society is to stop family violence. It has been reviewed as very readable since I explain the psychological concepts by presenting real offenders who were abused as children.
The Aces study allowed me to present offenders as adult victims of childhood trauma who chose aggression as a main coping skill. I do not excuse or justify the violence but seek to understand and develop interventions for the offenders.
I urge people to read my book and give me feedback. The book is Lifetrap: From Childhood Victim to Adult Victimization. It is available on Amazon.
