Sarah Peyton discusses her book & leads a guided meditation / Tuesday, Nov. 10th, 2020

I am thrilled to announce that we have a special A Better Normal on Tuesday, November 10th at 12p.m. PST / 3p.m. EST which will be part conversation and part guided meditation practice. Our special guest is Sarah Peyton, who is the author of Your Resonant Self: Guided Meditations and Exercise to Engage Your Brain’s Capacity for Healing. "I wrote this book for anyone who’s ever wondered why self-warmth might be a little difficult sometimes," she wrote.

The event will be hosted by me and facilitated by @Alison Cebulla .

res selfPeyton has a warm and effective way of working with trauma survivors. I am eager for an experiential event because like so many others I am tired, worn out, weary, and worried. I find myself more in need of rest, calming activities, and centering practices and less able to prioritize the things that help me most. So too often, I'm running on activism, hope, and fumes. I suspect I’m not alone.

Intellectually, I know flighty fight is as helpful as the frozen fog of stuckness I sometimes swim in but knowing better doesn't always prevent survival mode from taking over.

How do we stay aware, awake, engaged while also tending to our tired, anxious, and vulnerable selves and circumstances?

Where can we learn and practice how and why self-regulation and co-regulation might support us? How can we support ourselves and one another, especially when current fears and stressors call up our earliest, oldest, and most primal defense mechanisms?

Peyton writes: “For people who have never experienced much warmth, having affection for the self can be close to impossible to imagine, so it is important to make the discovery process as simple as possible.”

And that's exactly what she does. Self-warmth is a skill Peyton helps others develop and practice. She recognizes that for many who have experienced traumatic stress, it’s impossible (or seems  and feels impossible) to practice self-love if we are still driven by an almost unconscious but persistent form of self-hate. What she invites us to do is to learn, slowly and incrementally, and with guidance, where that inner resistance and harsh inner critic came from and and how we might access and communicate with ourselves in a different ways.

So if you struggle, as I have, with the concept of or practice of self-care, self-kindness or self-compassion, I invite you to this event to consider why that might be so and what might be possible. Peyton’s style can help survivors of trauma and ACEs to bypass the shame, inexperience, and awkwardness maybe felt when first practicing self-kindness. She teaches why and how a more gentle inner voice can be beneficial not only to individuals, but more widely when communicating with others as well.

Sarah PeyShe writes: “.... as we transform our inside voice, we start to change our outside voices, too, bringing new life to our families and communities and forming new connections with others who are transforming their inside voices. As we feel safe, we use words in ways that let others feel safe, too. Our bodies relax together as the patterns of communication shift and we learn to take more responsibility for our thoughts, our words, our actions”.

So, if you find you’d like to learn a new skill or maybe get a refresher, please join us.
