Bounce Coalition (KY)

Bounce is a coalition of community partners working together to build the resiliency of children, adults, and families by improving knowledge about the impact of ACEs and the skills to help people bounce back from adversity. We do this by: educating and training; measuring impact; and advocating for policies that support trauma-informed communities. www.bouncecoalition.org

Building Resilience in Child and Youth-Serving Organizations

The Bounce Coalition recently wrapped up its year-long work with two youth-serving organizations in the Greater Louisville area. With support from the C. E. and S. Foundation, Bounce provided training and technical assistance to the YMCA of Greater Louisville’s Infant, Toddler and Preschool Program and School-Age Child Care Program (K-8), and Boys & Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana’s legacy clubs in the Newburg, Parkland, and Shawnee neighborhoods to become trauma-informed organizations – serving children and families through self-sustaining healing-centered policies and practices.

Over the 12+ months of work, Bounce:

- hosted 8 rounds of Bounce 101 and Bounce 102 training for staff and board members

- trained 67 agency staff and board members on Racial Trauma and Healing

- trained 59 parents and caregivers on Self-Care and Building on Your Child’s Strengths

- trained 8 staff from each organization to become Certified Bounce Trainers

- provided technical assistance to each organization

As Steve Tarver, Chief Executive Office of YMCA of Greater Louisville stated:

“The impact of trauma leading to poor health, particularly of our younger youth, is compelling. The need to build leadership that can show positivity in building resilience and showing empathy is of critical importance. The support of Bounce in promoting this training to a large and diverse audience of leaders makes an observable difference in building protective factors for children that pay dividends now and in the future.”

Tip of the Month

Make note of your compliments. Compliments can serve as reminders that you matter, your existence is important, and someone appreciates you. This self-care practice helps you fight negative thoughts and bad days.  Note your compliments by keeping them in a journal, diary, or an online folder. Your compliment folder can also include emails, notes, thank you cards, and other things that make you smile.

                                 Resources

November is National Adoption Month. This year, the focus is on helping teens in foster care find permanent families.

The foster care experience can create feelings of uncertainty, mistrust, and inadequacy. Home for A While by Laura Kerstein shows how respect, kindness, and understanding can help a child build resilience and recognize their strengths.
