Oroville district to talk childhood trauma [OrovilleMR.com]

With the goal of helping teachers help students, the Oroville City Elementary School District is hiring an expert in childhood trauma to come speak to teachers before the start of the school year.

The district is bringing in a licensed marriage and family therapist to discuss adverse childhood experiences and child trauma, and strategies for teachers in the classroom. The consultant will discuss how potentially traumatic events, which can include everything from neglect or abuse to divorce to incarceration of a parent, can affect a child’s behavior.

The idea of bringing in a trauma expert first came up as the district began seeing an increasing number of children with challenging behavioral issues, and also out of a desire to reduce expulsions and suspensions while providing teachers with the tools to help kids.

“It’s come about because it can be very stressful trying to teach and be an administrator and trying to figure out, ‘how do we help the kids,’ because everyone wants to help the kids,” Superintendent Penny Chennell-Carter said. “It seems to be there are more young children, elementary children, with a lot of challenging behaviors, and I think Oroville like all schools, we want to really meet the needs of our kids.”
