How a story about childhood trauma in Paradise became one of community trauma [centerforhealthjournalism.org]

My project for the Center for Health Journalism’s California Fellowship was focused on childhood trauma, zeroing in on a town in Northern California. In the fall, that town — Paradise, California — burned in a harrowing wildfire. The story quickly changed to one of community loss. The story of trauma in two counties My initial project was about Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs. ACEs are one way to quantify how much childhood trauma a person has experienced before the age of 18. Through...

New Self Help App for Trauma Relief available for free from the Peaceful Heart Network

Ulf Sandstrom and Gunilla Hamne of Peaceful Heart Network have spent years in Africa and now in Europe teaching survivors of civil wars and other traumas the Trauma Tapping Technique (TTT), which uses a simplified version of EFT tapping to relieve stress and trauma from the body without using words. They recently released a free app (available in multiple languages) with easy-to-follow video instructions. This would be a great way to introduce children to tapping. Here's what they had to...

Camp Fire: Return to school about giving students some long-needed normalcy [chicoer.com]

CHICO — His new math book in hand, 14-year-old George Rood walked over to the impromptu photo backdrop in the Pleasant Valley High School library to get his picture taken for his new student ID card. Overcoming a Lifetime of Trauma, Then Facing a New One: Wildfire [centerforhealthjournalism.org]

KQED News Monday, November 19, 2018 Sabrina Hanes has faced a lot of trauma in her life, most of it in her childhood. As part of her healing, she moved to a Northern California town called Paradise. A Resource for Emotional Recovery

In response to last year's wildfires in Sonoma County, my colleagues and I created a resource to help people with emotional recovery from any kind of disaster. Two New Grant Opportunities for Youth Development and Diversion Services

In 2019, more than $40 million will become available to fund community-based, culturally rooted, trauma-informed services for youth in California as alternatives to arrest and incarceration. Thousands of California youth are arrested every year for low-level offenses. Youth who are arrested or incarcerated for low-level offenses are less likely to graduate high school, more likely to suffer negative health-outcomes, and more likely to have later contact with the justice system.

We don’t know,” said Kindra Britt, a public information officer with the Placer County Office of Education and one of many from outside Butte County who’ve joined the recovery effort. “People are running on fumes — they’re running on less than fumes.
