"Speak Out! Confronting the Culture of Child Sexual Abuse and Secrecy" was the theme of Santa Clara County's 37th Annual Child Abuse Prevention Symposium which featured a Keynote conversation with Olympic Gold Medal winning gymnast and current UCLA Assistant Gymnastics Coach Jordyn Wieber.
Jordyn, and other athletes and survivors of former USA Gymnastics team doctor and serial child sex abuser Larry Nassar, earlier spoke to a U.S. Senate Subcommittee about a “culture of silence” more interested in winning than in protecting athletes. Jordyn, who is dedicated to making the sport safe for children and all athletes, talked to the Symposium attendees about her experience and encouraged other victims and survivors to speak out when they felt they were ready to do so.
The Symposium also featured a presentation by Victor Vieth, JD, MA, of the Zero Abuse Project, on "Institutional Abuse: Understanding and Responding to Child Abuse within Faith Communities, Sports, Youth Serving Organizations, and Universities. The video of Jordyn's conversation, along with related media videos and reports, and the presentation materials from Victor Vieth are all available at:
