4CA POLICYMAKER EDUCATION DAY JULY 11, 2017 - REGISTER BY JUNE 1 - Link Below.

Join 4CA in Sacramento on July 11 for Policymaker Education Day on Childhood Adversity! Our lawmakers need to hear from you about how childhood adversity affects your community and what they can do to help. Join with allies from across California to engage your elected officials on this important issue. (Bonus! lunchtime pep talk by Senator Holly Mitchell!)

Who: 4CA Policymaker Education Day is designed for California residents who care about preventing and mitigating the effects of childhood adversity. We welcome young people, parents and neighbors, people who work in juvenile justice, health, education, early childhood or child welfare, and others. Register for the event before June 1, and please invite others

What: All participants will be given tools and training to prepare for afternoon meetings with state senators, assembly members, legislative staffers and agency officials. Newcomers will be matched with experienced advocates. See the schedule for the day, and think about what to ask of your elected representative. This is event is provided at no charge to participants, and lunch will be provided. Limited funds are available to reimburse travel expenses.

For more information or to help plan the event, contact Kelly Hardy at khardy@childrennow.org or 510-763-2444 x126. If you have a specific question about event registration or travel reimbursement, contact Sara Marques at

SCHEDULE

This event will begin at the California Endowment, 1414 K Street, Sacramento, in the Adelante Room on the 1st floor. Afternoon meetings will take place at the California State Capitol at 11th and L Streets. The morning venue and this preliminary schedule may change in the coming weeks as we finalize logistics:

9:30 a.m.          Registration begins
10 a.m.              Event kick-off and advocacy training
11:45 a.m.          Lunch and remarks by Senator Holly Mitchell
1 to 4:30 p.m.    Meetings with policymakers and legislative staff

The advocacy training on July 11 is designed to help you decide what to ask your policymaker to do about childhood adversity. You can propose your own idea and 4CA will provide materials for help you to:

  • Suggest a promising policy idea for addressing childhood adversity and trauma
  • Share ways to make any bills they introduce or support more trauma-informed
  • Ask your policymaker to vote for or against a specific bill related to childhood adversity

As long as the conversation and policy ask relates to childhood adversity in some way, participants can use the time with elected officials how they like. You should feel free to talk about hunger or deportation stress, for example, so long as you present these issues as childhood adversities.
