Dr. Nadine Burke Harris and Dr. Ray Bignall on Exposure to Racism and Discrimination as Risk Factors for Toxic Stress
ACEs Aware hosted the first in a series of webinars that explore research demonstrating how exposure to racism and other forms of discrimination can serve as risk factors for the toxic stress response and lead to ACE-Associated Health Conditions. Visit the blog for key takeaways from part one of the series, including how social drivers like neighborhood segregation, income inequality, and policing contribute to ACEs, and specific steps providers can take to engage and advocate solutions to effectively support patients who are at greater risk of ACEs.
ACEs Aware Grantee Highlights
When two ACEs Aware communications grants were awarded to Merced County, a strategic alliance between the Merced County Office of Education’s Family Resource Center and ACE Overcomers was developed to achieve greater impact through collaboration. Grantee Spotlight Webinar
On June 16, 2021, three ACEs Aware grantees shared their successes promoting ACE screening, sustainable trauma-informed systems-level changes, and strategies for self-care and resilience for health and human services staff. California Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris listened to each presentation and asked grantees targeted questions about what they’re learning and how their promising practices can inform the ACEs Aware initiative.
