School suspension rates are unusually high in Humboldt County, but school districts say they’re working on reducing those numbers.
Overall, the county had a 6.6% suspension rate across all its schools during the 2017-2018 school year, compared with a rate of 3.5% for the rest of the state, according to data from the state Department of Education. In some districts, school suspensions jump into the double digits – 11.2% at Southern Humboldt Joint Unified, 28.2% at Loleta Union Elementary, 16.3% at Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified and 16.2% at Fortuna Union High.
The situation is even more bleak for students from vulnerable populations. Homeless students face a 5.6% suspension rate across the state and 12.7% across Humboldt County. The suspension rate for homeless students goes as high as 31.8% at Southern Humboldt Joint Unified.
