KQED will be part of a remarkable media collaboration highlighting the issue of homelessness in the Bay Area. More than 70 news organizations have come together to ask some crucial questions: Why do we seem to be seeing so many more individuals living in tents on our streets? What is being done to address the growing housing affordability and availability crisis? You can read the SF Homeless Project's letter of intent here.
KQED has been covering housing and homelessness for decades, and we will be sharing some pieces, including a 1982 documentary produced for KQED TV, here, along with new reports coming this week from around the Bay — from San Jose to San Rafael, and Alameda to Antioch.
On June 29 and throughout this week, KQED will host community conversations on Forum. On air and online, KQED News will bring you voices of homeless individuals and stories of those living on the edge of homelessness. KQED Arts will introduce you to homeless artists and see how artists are responding to the crisis. We'll share a special 360 video that lets you experience life on the streets of San Francisco and we'll answer some of the many questions you asked via Bay Curious. We are also airing a call-in radio special on June 29, The Politics of Homelessness, hosted by Scott Shafer.
We are deeply grateful for the incredible community support we've received so far around this project. Researchers and nonprofit organizations have reached out to us, and we haven't been able to respond to everyone — yet. In the meantime, we've created a space where you can share your ideas and experiences, and tell us what's happening in your own communities.
KQED will continue to cover this issue and all of the related and underlying economic and social factors on an ongoing basis.
