Shasta County health officials have released a five-year plan to address the community’s health needs by focusing in on three key issues — harmful substance use, mental wellness, and chronic disease.
The Community Health Improvement Plan was compiled by the Public Health Branch of the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency, and was revealed this week.
“We chose these (issues) because we thought this was something we could make a difference on together,” said Brandy Isola, public health deputy branch director.
The agency conducted a countywide survey in February 2016 and received 2,850 responses before finalizing what key areas to focus on. The goal is to push for prevention and education through community engagement, reduce barriers for treatment and recovery and improve the overall health outcome by addressing chronic health issues like diabetes.
Public Health Branch Director Terri Fields Hosler said they plan to take prevention a step further by addressing adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs — those childhood experiences that are unhappy, unhealthy and hurtful.
