From California Conservation Corps, July 2021
The COVID-19 Pandemic has interrupted the final year of schooling for thousands of California seniors- especially McKinney-Vento eligible and foster youth, potential 5th-year seniors, and other students most at risk of dropping out. As California slowly emerges from social distancing, Governor Newsome's office projects unemployment in the state could reach 18%, a rate not seen in close to 100 years. This rate will disproportionately affect 18-25-year-olds without a high school diploma.
The California Conservation Corps (CCC) provides a valuable service to exactly this student population, and has been doing so effectively since 1976- over 44 years!
In the California Conservation Corps, young people receive:
- 40 Hours a week of paid work and vocational training
- A living allowance/stipend of 1,905.00 per month
- Medical Insurance
- Scholarship opportunities up to $9,000
- WASC Accredited public high school services for those without a diploma
- Preferential hiring for California State jobs to those who complete 1 full year
- 9 of the 23 CCC locations in California are residential- Corpsmembers can live and work in the same location. Dorm-style room and board is only $400 per month (through paycheck deduction), a wonderful opportunity for transitioning foster and homeless young people.
- Vocational training in firefighting, trail building, energy, construction, culinary, corps leadership, and many other areas
Young men and women may learn more about The CCC and fill out an application to join at https://ccc.ca.gov, some recruitment materials are attached to this email as well. This is a wonderful and life-changing experience for young people. We truly hope you can pass this information along to young people who can be well served by the CCC. Please contact me directly if I can provide any additional information about the CCC and/or the services it provides to young men and women across the state.
