As Oroville students continue to face social and economic hardships, high schools are working to improve their experiences and access to opportunities as adults.
Staff at Oroville Union High School District’s schools say they are working to address the effects of widespread adverse childhood experiences. In the last decade, Butte County has been reported with the highest number of adverse childhood experiences in California in the Adverse Childhood Experiences study conducted in 2013. Californians have higher rates of those experiences than most states, and among Butte County residents surveyed in 2013, 76.5% reported experienced one or more of those adverse experiences before age 18.
Knowing that, Las Plumas High administrators are working to address challenges facing students, including food insecurity, living in poverty and unstable housing.
