Using Surveys of Students' Social-Emotional Skills and School Climate for Accountability and Continuous Improvement [EdPolicyinCA.org]
This report and accompanying policy brief show that there is good reason to pursue the measurement of social-emotional learning (SEL) and school culture/climate (CC) as a way to better understand student and school performance. Using data from California's CORE districts, we show that SEL and CC measures demonstrate reliability and validity, distinguish between schools, are related to other academic and non-academic measures, and also illuminate dimensions of student achievement that go...

You're Not Losing Your Mind - Really [chcf.org]
By Xenia Shih Bion, California Health Care Foundation, May 11, 2020 The COVID-19 crisis has stunned the nation with medical trauma that has unfolded on an unimaginable scale. A vaccine or treatment may come along that halts the pandemic’s remorseless progress, but the damage done to our psyches may be with us for a long, long time. The data show that living under the threat of infection by the novel coronavirus is taking a toll. A recent KFF health tracking poll found that 56% of US adults...

San Bruno, CA, police reduce stress, burn-out with mindfulness
When Officer John Hampton of the San Bruno Police Department in San Bruno, CA, first heard that mindfulness training was being offered to him and his fellow cops, he had two reactions. John Hampton “I think my major reaction was: ‘Oh, there’s some hippy thing that they’re trying to get cops to do,’” he said. “When I say that, it’s funny because that’s not my voice. It’s the caricature of a police officer-like voice. In the back of my mind, I was interested and open to it, but that police...

Understanding social and emotional learning: a quick guide [EdSource.org]
To improve education, California is asking schools to improve the way they meet the emotional as well as the academic needs of students. Among the strategies is what’s known as social and emotional learning , which refers to an organized method of teaching students behavioral expectations, self-management and relationship skills. This FAQ explains what social and emotional learning is, why schools say it matters and which school districts are paying the most attention to the concept. What is...

By Cathie Anderson, The Sacramento Bee, November 12, 2019 About three and a half years ago, paramedic Susan Farren underwent major surgery for kidney cancer, and as she lay in the recovery room, one of her doctors told her that he had treated quite a few first responders with organ cancers. The comment stuck with her. “I went home and started researching it after getting out of the hospital,” Farren said, “and for the next year and a half, that’s what I did every single day. I researched...

Re: ‘Change in culture’: New California guidelines aim to help teach social, emotional skills [Press Democrat]
This looks like a great resource for schools! I see one mention of trauma in the list of resources (National Child Traumatic Stress Network) In the future I would like to see the worlds of SEL and ACEs/Resilience/Trauma-Informed be more directly connected as they are so aligned. It is confusing for schools to have these seen as separate buckets (along with RJ), which leads to initiative fatigue. It would be beneficial to find a way to articulate all of this in a holistic whole system...
