It’s a warm spring afternoon and Arturo Soriano is in his old stomping grounds—at Teralta Park, a small urban park atop a sunken freeway in San Diego’s City Heights neighborhood. As a teenage gang member in the 1980s, Soriano roamed the park and the surrounding streets before spending the better part of two decades in prison. Now 40, he has returned with a different mission.

The day for me kicked off with words of respect for the natives whose land we all were occupying. Yes, the rich aroma of mindfulness was in full bloom and it pollinated our ears with the truth. Native and traditional dances were showcased, kids looked on curiously, and the vendors, local businesses and resources, shared the various ways in which they are there to support the community. Over break beats, multicultural feet and smiles hipped and hopped to the funky freshness of diversity.

Data released last month by the Census Bureau supports that notion, showing that even as more San Diegans are finding work, more of them are falling into poverty.
