I can’t remember a time I didn’t want to be a nurse. It was the answer to every “What do you want to be when you grow up?” question posed in grade school.
By the time I was a teenager, I was volunteering as a candy striper. When it was time for college, it was off to Cal State Hayward (now Cal State East Bay), where I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the newly expanded nursing program there on my first try.
I started my career as an ICU nurse and, today, I am the chief nurse executive at Sutter Coast Hospital. I spent 10 years in between there as an emergency department and trauma manager before going into administration. In fact, I have spent almost my entire career in the Sutter system. As our family welcomed grandchildren into the mix, I came to the North Coast to be close to my daughter, who studied to be a nurse herself. Unfortunately, though, the Humboldt State University nursing program where she studied closed a short time later.
This passion and these experiences – not unique to me in a field that many of my colleagues consider a calling – are why Sutter Health’s recent investments in nursing education matter to me both personally and professionally.
