A small group of committed faculty and staff at Bluegrass Community and Technical College were excited to be approved to study the community at BCTC in the context of ACEs! We will apply previously understood research on ACEs in the context of our population at BCTC to better meet the educational needs of students. We have begun to collect ACE score data from faculty and staff as we lead presentations and discussion on ACEs and resilience building. We will continue with our student population in the fall of 2021. Quantitative data will include the 10 ACEs score as well as demographic data with respect to race, ethnicity, gender orientation, current zip code and country of birth. Our goal is to create more awareness of and sensitivity to diversity in the BCTC community, enhance college services and activities to address the needs of multicultural students, and get a glimpse of the impact of intersectionality on ACE scores in rural and urban communities.
Subsequent trainings will be held for faculty and staff to learn how to best meet the needs of our students while building resilience in themselves. Professional development activities for faculty and staff will help to facilitate compassion and understanding and allow for them to learn new ways to increase class participation and learning.
