Resilience is a protective factor for ACE's and usually involves one's ability to create meaning of a traumatic or adverse childhood experience. Our ability to cope and make meaning through the avenue of religion and spirituality can be confused and crushed beneath the impact of spiritual abuse. If we are wanting to educate faith based communities about the impact of ACE's and trauma, we must address the issue of spiritual abuse.
I listened to a great podcast today by The Liturgists Podcast, in which Hillary McBride, Teresa Pasquale Mateus, and Carol Howard Merrit dicusse the issue of spiritual trauma in church and religious contexts. The Liturgist Podcast is put on by Michael Gungor, Science Mike, and group of bright and talented thinkers and creators who frequently chat about issues of science, art, and faith.
To learn more about spiritual abuse, I also direct you to read Mending The Soul by Steve & Celestia Tracy.
Enjoy!
